The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. It is an innate healing modality rediscovered in the late 1800’s by Dr Mikao Usui.

As Reiki energy is high vibration energy –  it can flow in, over and through anything, this enables it to work holistically on the whole person, mind, body and spirit.

It is believed that a person’s “ki” or energy should be strong and free flowing but many people have energy that is blocked or weakened and this can lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance. Much like acupuncture, but without the need for needles, Reiki works to get rid of the blockages.

A Reiki session can help ease tension and stress.

It is calming and and can help support the body to heal on all levels, physical, mental, and emotional.

Reiki energy knows where it is needed most. It can:

  • Accelerate natural healing of wounds
  • Aid relaxation and stress
  • Relieve pain
  • Help with concentration
  • Boost the immune system
  • Clear toxins from the body
  • Calm you when you are frightened
  • Assist with grieving
  • Increase mobility in joints
  • Dissolve energy blockages
  • Work on helping with emotional issues

A session is usually about 60 minutes long.

An initial discussion will take place which gives any client the opportunity to discuss any particular problems or issues they are experiencing and what they are hoping to achieve from their session.

In the actual healing session, the client will rest comfortably on a massage table on their back with their shoes removed.

Unlike massage no clothes are removed.

A session can be hands-on, where light touch will be applied, or hands-off where hands can be held slightly above your body. A Reiki practitioner will  lightly place hands near main energy centres / chakras – no manipulation of any kind is used.

Reiki can feel like a warming sensation or a tingling during the session or nothing at all but sheer relaxation, almost like a lovely deep sleep.

Emotions can come up during a session or after the session is finished. This is perfectly normal and all part of the unblocking work.

Tiredness can also be normal after a session. You will have processed a lot as things release and come to the surface, allow rest if this occurs.

After your Reiki session, you should drink lots of water.

If any words, visions, or people come to mind during a session write them down.

Journaling after Reiki sessions is highly encouraged and can be extremely beneficial.Reiki is not a cure for a disease or illness, but it can assist the body to create an environment to facilitate healing.

A distance Reiki treatment is just as effective as in-person treatments.

Reiki can allow you to receiving healing from afar and is beneficial for those who are unable to come for in-person sessions.

During Second degree Reiki training  I have learnt how to use Reiki symbols, one of which is the distance symbol, when this symbol is invoked it allows me to send healing Reiki energy across time and space.

When practising Reiki on someone who is not physically present, this symbol is used to connect to his or her energy.

Setting up a mutual time for the treatment can be useful so the recipient is open to receiving the energy. However, distance Reiki can be sent to anyone, anywhere and at any time although permission always has to be sought for it to work the way it should.

My distance Reiki clients always have the same breakthroughs as those that I work with in person.

In fact sometimes their experience is even more powerful because they are not physically present with me.

Literally, distance Reiki can work on anyone, including animals.

Distance Reiki programmes can also be set up so that a person receives Reiki at a certain time as a daily treatment or as a block of treatments for a person who knows that they will be experiencing a stressful or traumatic event.

An example of this would be when I set up a distance Reiki programme for my daughter.

She was off to school camp and petrified of being away from home. I set up a programme for her and every time she said my name, either in her head or out loud, she received a hit or Reiki to give her courage and strength.
