Hands up who here is the queen of procrastination?
Yeap, that would be me. I have been procrastinating my entire life.
Was literally one of those people who would procrastinate over something for days, weeks, even months sometimes and then finally make a decision and want the thing like now, instant gratification right!!!
And I would procrastinate over every single part of my life.
If you are like me, how do you stop it, what do you do when that part of yourself takes over?
I might just have something for you……….read on
You might be procrastinating about starting that new business, not having enough time in the day to do what you want to do after working your day job, feeding the kids, cleaning the house and taking the dog for a walk.
You might even start to put things in your calendar as reminders, reduce the time you scroll through social media, watch Netflix, or just trying to plan better.
All of those things are brilliant, BUT here’s the thing, if you aren’t working on WHY you feel you don’t have enough time in the day to do what you want to do, you won’t stick to any of it. You will keep banging your head against the wall over and over and over again, until you procrastinate your way to doing nothing.
Because what’s the point right, you cant stick to your time goals anyway and something extra always comes up which means you cant do the work because there are just not enough hours in the day.
So you never launch the business.
The issue lies not in the lack of activity, not in the lack of planning, not in the lack of wanting………..
It lies in your thoughts.
Procrastination is ALWAYS a thought problem
If you dont take time to look through your subconscious to find the root cause of your procrastination you will keep on doing the same things.
A good example of this could be a post that you want to create for social media.
You have an idea, its something that you want to share, you’ve been thinking about it for a while now, you sit down with your phone fully intending to write that post………..
But instead you get distracted with someone else’s cute puppy post or the latest meme or reel and before you know it a couple of house have gone by, you’ve lost the moment, its too late now and you need to make dinner anyway, so you don’t post it.
This can go on for days, the same pattern, the same lack of progress, not posting even though your conscious mind keeps nudging you to do it.
You get frustrated and you start to berate yourself because you are not brave enough, or you dont feel you are being authentic, or maybe even by not posting you are getting a lack of results in your online business.
The only way to stop this is to work out WHY you don’t want to post that post
Is it that you fear what people will think?
That you are scared to put yourself out there in that way?
Being vulnerable will leave you open for comments you are no ready to see.
A family member or friend might see it.
What if your boss comes across it, what will they think?
What if no-one reads the post anyway and you have pushed yourself for absolutely nothing?
I know what its like
You see, I hid my spiritual side from the world for years because of a fear that people would judge me.
It was only when I worked on the root cause that I overcame my fears, my procrastination, my putting things off and really made the jump into where I am now, and it is the most liberating place to be. Because now I am free to be me, to not have to pretend, to be fully and totally authentic and that feels good.
Whatever the thoughts are, whatever your subconscious is doing to stop you, those thoughts are creating intense feelings in your body.
Fear, comparison, inferiority, overwhelm.
And when you feel those intense feelings you panic, you brain wants to keep you safe and so it makes you do something else instead, something you have always done before, something safe, something comforting………like scrolling through those memes and reels.
So the next time you notice you are getting distracted or putting something off ask yourself why? Ask yourself what am I thinking right now that is stopping me from doing this? What am I feeling?
And just notice.
Because once you are aware of it, once you know and can identify the feeling, the cause, the root of your procrastinating you can stop it once and for all.
